The prescription data issued by Medicare prescription drug benefits (referred to as Part D) is compiled and published by the federal agency Medicare and Medicaid Services, the federal agency responsible for the program. The 2016 data includes more than 1.5 billion prescriptions issued by 1.1 million doctors, nurses and other providers. The database lists 460,000 health care providers who issued 50 or more prescriptions for at least one drug that year. More than three-quarters of these prescriptions are given to patients 65 years and older. The rest are disabled patients. method"
